Colon Cancer Could Almost Be Eliminated with the Right Care

Simply getting a colonoscopy every five to ten years, depending on your personal and family history, is enough to eliminate 90% of colon cancer deaths! That's because it is more than just a screening. During the procedure, doctors actually remove any polyps they see that could turn into cancer. Since most colon cancer is slow growing, removing polyps during a colonoscopy is an effective way to prevent the vast majority of people from ever getting this deadly disease.

In addition to colonoscopies (but NOT instead of them), there are a few other things you can do to reduce your colon cancer risk even more:

1. Stop smoking; drink only moderately. Smoking and heavy drinking are both linked to higher risk for a variety of cancers.

2. Maintain a healthy weight. Get exercise. Being sedentary and overweight also contributes to colon cancer.

3. Eat a healthy, plant-based diet. A diet that is low in meat-based protein has been shown in study after study to improve your overall health and longevity. If you include fish, onions and curcumin (the yellow pigment in turmeric) in your diet, all of those foods seem to provide some protection against cancer cells in the colon.

4. Drink coffee. Yep, coffee drinkers seem to have a lower colon cancer risk. Around four cups a day seems to be ideal.

5. Take a multi-vitamin that contains 400 mcg. of folic acid (which is in virtually all multi-vitamins). In addition, add another 1000 mg of extra Vitamin D per day. Both of these vitamins are associated with lower cancer risk, including colon cancer.

6. Get screened for blood in your stools once a year. It is an early indicator that you could be developing a problem between your colonoscopies.

If you do most of the things on the list above AND you get a colonoscopy on the schedule suggested by your doctor, the odds are very, very low that you will ever have colon cancer.

Do yourself and your family a favor. If you are over 50, or if you have a family or personal history of colon cancer or inflammatory bowel diseases, schedule a colonoscopy as soon as possible.

It could save your life.
